| A couple of days ago I came home to find that Asha had chewed off one of the four drip irrigation valves I had setup. She tore it off, snapping the threads of the pipe, requiring me to cut out the 'T' in the main line, and refit the entire assembly.
After I had fixed the valve, I realized that unless I wanted to keep doing this, I needed to puppy-proof the system. So, I began the project of reworking the entire front-slope irrigation line. I dug a trench to bury the pipes, replaced the simple always-up sprinklers with pop-ups, and buried all of the drip system lines. I also installed several 'T's from the main drip-system line, so that I could run small "spaghetti" line to potted plants, and I installed three valves, so that I could turn off the drip lines, or the sprinklers.
I'm not sure why I decided to undertake this project right then, but after sitting in my office working on [AprsWorld] for days, it felt damn good. Since the ground around here is made up almost entirely of sand stone and clay, the trenching was a lot of work. I also started the long job of tearing out all the vine-like ground cover on the front slope, and so I quite substantially over exerted myself. Before I took a double-shot of Alieve today, I could barely lift my arms. Did that stop me from going right back out? No. Of course not. Now, after having over-exerted myself again, I'm quite sure that I'm going to wake up tomorrow parallized with pain and muscle spasms. Still, I had fun, and all possible forms of plant life on that slope will now be properly irrigated, from ground cover, to the Tangerine tree, to the Apple tree, to the not yet Giant Redwood.

anonymous (2004-06-14): My Rottweiler puppy, from December to present, has chewed up 90% of my black plastic drip system. Yesterday we timed his efficiency... he can slice a half-inch line in 5 seconds. Nothing is salvagable (nor would it survive if salvaged. I called the place I bought the stuff & asked if he has metal equivalents... "No we just have plastic."
I have clay soil, so I'm thinking, thinking... Any suggestions? Thanks. [email protected]
Erik (2004-06-14): I had to bury nearly every inch of my irrigation lines. That works, but she still finds one every now and then just by random digging. I've simply resigned myself to a perpetual battle with dog-driven entropy.
Kevin (2004-07-12): There's got to be a vendor that makes stainless steel drip lines. I'd buy them. I have 2 Golden Retrievers that are constantly pulling the drip lines out of the main water line. It's getting very old replacing them week after week. Burying the lines have not been successful for me.
Erik (2004-07-12): Stainless steel would be terribly expensive. You could do it with copper though. It'd be an interesting project, and very sturdy!
MB (2005-03-06): I found your site because my dog is also chewing up the irrigation lines. A friend told me to put "mentolatum" on the drip and wrap foil around the line going to the water source. My dog is no longer interested in water lines!!!
Doug (2010-01-18): You can convert to 1/2 copper line and 1in drippers then cover the drippers with 1inch copper pipe cut to 2in length and slipped over the drip valve bullet proof
