Ok, the truck is coming out of it's teenage years I think, as it rounds the 50k mile mark (in only 21 months!). I think it's time to start looking at long-term maintnence.
Up until now I have been using Valvoline 20-50 oil, changed every 3k miles or less, which is the same type the dealer uses. However, I've been hearing very good things about synthetic oils on d-web. Synthetic oils provide more lubrication, and contain less nasty elements. They are better for high milage vehicles, or vehicles that expect to be high milage, and they work better in extreemes of temperature. Also, most are touted to conduct heat better than dino (non-synthetic, kind of a joke) oil, and so conduct heat to the coolant better.
After doing some research, it seems that most people tend to think that Amsoil is the best, but hard to find. Mobile 1 is by far the easiest to find, and it seems, in most people's opinion, only slightly less wonderful than Amsoil.
I may dicide to switch to Amsoil or RedLine, another favorite, but for my first experience, I'm going with Mobile 1. It seems no one really has anything bad to say about it, and lots good to say. I just put it in my truck this morning, so we'll see how it works out. I don't really expect any noticable difference, but if it's as slippery, and good for engines as people say it is, I should see a minor change in my [Land Rover Milage//milage graph] and the temp guage should stay even closer to the middle on hot days and uphill climbs.
First Impression: After driving around town a bit, I honestly think it did get a small increase in power! The truck down-shifted less, and just generally felt happier! Weigh this opinion with the phycholocical factor though...
Update: 2003/03/15: After a few months, the results are in. I think using Mobile 1 in the crank-case increased my MPG by about 1 (See [Land Rover Milage//milage graph]). I feel better too, knowing my engine is being pampered. So, I am using Mobile 1 lubricants everywhere, from the diffs and t-case to the drive shaft. I don't expect this will have any effect on my MPG, but the parts should last longer. |

anonymous (2004-08-29): How long can you go between oil changes using mobile 1 synthetic and a heavy duty wix filter do ya think
Pete [email protected]
Erik (2004-08-29): Some people have said that you can extend the interval between oil changes, and indeed I think even the Mobile 1 literature says something to this affect, but I use Mobile 1 to be gentle on my truck, not to make live easier on me, so I still change the oil and filter every 3000 miles.
Fred (2004-09-30): A Mobil employee once told me that when Mobil was first developing synthetic oil they ran it in their fleet diesel trucks for 100,000 miles between changes and would then tear the engines down and measure wear. He claimed that they had no measurable wear after the first 100,000 miles.
Erik (2004-09-30): A few months ago, I had to replace my engine (bad block casting). My mechanic commented that the engine showed remarkably little wear for it's age, and said it was probably due to my using Mobile 1 exclusively. Also, my exhaust valves were very clean, probably due to my exclusive use of Chevron premium (with techron cleaner) gasoline.
Kenny (2004-10-06): I remember 30 years ago Mobile 1 came in a steel(not paper/foil)can, 24 to a case and was $5 a quart. They said 1 year or 25,000 mi. Being a juvinal delinquint, I swapped price tags W/a case of penzoil to save $96 betting the checkout girl @ Gemco wouldnt bat an eye! Well my mom drove that 74 fiat for 25 years and it still ran like new, and when it was tested for CA emissions, it put out less than the underhood sticker said it did when new! Too bad it didnt extend the life of the timing belt(my bad) for that was its demise. An airman friend said they used mobil synthetic in air force jets and I am still a believer. Only negs I heard was less seal swelling compounds that caused a friends high milage nissan to leak, which stopped when he changed back to whatever he was using. I saw this same thing again recently when another friend (also a high mi nissan)went from valvoline to penzoil(Jiffylubecrap)and it started leakin. The oil in that old fiat was as clean as new when we let it go. The only shop that ever touched that car was body and paint. I just changed oil when it just slightly turned dark or 1 year WCF. I got a 2000 dakota(4.7L ohc)w/50,000mi on it last year, changed to Mobile 1 and it dont leak a drop. Sorry to hear all yer probs w/that limeymobile(enough w/the pushrod motors!) but I'm hopin that Daimler/Chrysler has settled the chevy vs ford debate. Where did u hear about the cooling properties of synthetic? Because according to the late gene berg(vw guru) it did not cool as well in the air-cooled motor during his dyno tests, which is of little concern in water cooled engines. Also, I would avoid those 2 other brands you mentioned and stick w/mobile(a major brand) as I learned a similar hard lesson w/Bel-ray 2 stroke synthetic. I paid $5 a quart thinking it had 2 be better, never minding that it met no specs @ all! eg sae, api, astm, ect... And of course the users will reccomend it, just like crack-heads reccomend crack!
Kenny (2004-10-06): And for gasoline, if one were using clean gas to begin with, you would not need techroline or techron(make up u mind!) 1st choice: 76, 2nd choice Mobile, last choice: Shell, as per the late jack murphy, my neighbor, quoting:(independent lab test of commercial gasoline available in the 70's) http://216.239.41.104/search?q=cache:OrijY-kBsrcJ:kawtriple.com/mraxl/articles/1973%2520Superbikes/superbikes2.htm+%22jack+murphy%22+kawasaki+&hl=en&lr=lang_en He told me other gas was "asphalt base" and I used to show my friends how 76 spilled on concrete would not leave a stain as opposed to cheaper gas.
Stacey (2004-11-03): This is to KENNY... How did you know JACK MURPHY? He knew my dad, and I went to Jack's house a couple of times years ago. He helped my dad buy my first bike, a KZ400. Stacey
Stacey (2004-11-03): Kenny can contact me at [email protected]
anonymous (2005-03-03): Is it smart to use hi-milage oil in a car that has 50k miles or more?
Erik (2005-03-03): I have heard that some people can experience problems with the new oil loosening globs of gunk, which can clog oil lines/filters. I have not experienced this myself, nor known anyone who has. A common problem is increased leakage relative to 'dino' oil. I have not experienced this either. If you're worried, you can try the blend brands, which are part synthetic and part 'dino', and move to full synth slowly.
Just in case of gunk getting loose, when I switched I ran the first fill for only a thousand miles or so, and changed the oil and filter. No problems then or since, and my engine is always clean as a whistle.
Gerald (2005-03-24): My duramax diesel has about 33,000 miles. Should I take the chance and change? I run my duramax 5,000 miles on a change. My present oil is Shell Rotella.
Gerald (2005-03-24): I am thinking of using Mobile one because Wal-Mart always chnages my oil. My e-mail adress is: [email protected]
Erik (2005-03-24): Gerald, you should be OK, but I'm hardly an expert.
woody (2005-07-15): Take a look at this site: http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/mobil1.html
About a group that did there own testing on Mobile 1 and Amsoil. I typically go 5-6,000 miles between changes with Mobile 1 and a good filter. Has slightly increased my gas mileage, 1-2 more/gal.
Andrew (2009-07-06): I been using Mobil 1 in bikes/cars and trucks since 1979 in New Zealand. I even run it in my lawnmower! Still starts first pull (Iron horse brand 4stroke), never changed the oil since new October 1979. I recommend, you run a new engine on factory lube until 15000 then change to Mobil 1 so the rings bed in properly. I was a field tech for a multinational computer company and traveled 6 days a week and clocked 60,000K in a Honda Civic over the 63,000 on it when I bought it. Ran Mobil 1 from the day I got it, at 120,000 got my brother an automotive reconditioner to pull it down and check it. He found one worn cam follower, the bores were the same as a car done just 60,000 in fact he had to check I hadn't changed the engine. He uses Mobil 1 now in all his trucks now.
I only change the oil when it changes to dark brown, When its new its a weak yellow in bright light, after about 1000 it goes light brown almost golden in the light, when it goes dark I change it. In most of my cars that's about 20,000 depending on how you drive. My wife's Ford Laser 1.6L
auto has now done 200,000Km (Km not miles), and the engine is just as good as when we bought it. Still got that "cackle" in the exhaust, and btw still on the same exhaust. In fact I can't think of any of the vehicles I've run Mobil 1 in needing a new exhaust.
In short, I love the stuff. Best example I can give is this.
I owned a brand new 1985 Ford Laser 1.1Litre manual (Don't ask me why, my wife liked the color), it was a POS, weak as a, well it was the weakest car I ever had, had to change down to 2nd to get up some hills on the way home from the Base. Got so sick of that, in desperation I changed it to Mobil 1 and replaced the gearbox fluid with ATF. Well it was like bolting on another cylinder, it got up the same hills in 4th. It was still a POS so I sold it and bought the Civic. The Civic did 600,000 before my Dad crashed it in to a boat. (don't ask)
Mike #22 (2010-08-05): Mobil 1 is excellent oil, we use it in our 800 horsepower race car, this oil has allowed us to run a full season before a rebuild or refresh. We also use Mobil 1 for a number of stock applications in our Mesa Automotive shop, recommended the full-synthetic on a regular basis.
